Cellar with « archère »

One of the buildings leaning against the south-east curtain wall had a cellar in the basement accessible by a staircase located in one of the corners. For obvious defense reasons, the construction of the building could not lead to a reduction in military capabilities. It was therefore necessary to preserve the two archers with which the curtain wall was equipped in this place. Furthermore, it was also essential to create a walkway. To achieve these two objectives, a wall was raised against the curtain wall, bringing its thickness to nearly 1.50m, and two embrasures were created to allow archers or crossbowmen to shoot through the masonry.

These precautions did not prevent the almost total destruction of the building by fire, probably in the context of the attack of 1430. The excavations in fact led to the discovery over the entire surface of the cellar of a thick layer of fire. in which numerous objects from the ground floor were found. This one, according to the discovery of large quantities of fragments of rubbed cob, was built of half-timbered wood and collapsed in the cellar following the fire.
